Y14 Rügen Pike Adventure, Chapter 11

Wading through 4 feet of freezing cold water, stuck knee deep in mud, blistering cold fingers and constantly blowing wind,… fly fishing for northern pikes. This is the winter fly fishing on Rügen. I’m loving it.

What makes this fishery and this location so special. Why do we come year after year. It is the mix of everything. You have to fish with your whole body, you feel it every evening. Its truly an exhausting fishery. Rügen is by far not the most beautiful fishing spot. Yes there are areas that are really nice and the sandy flats do have its own flair. Unfortunately the nicest places are all protected and fishing is prohibited. I don’t want to motivate you to do something forbidden but remember my words. If you would fish there, you might catch a lot of pikes that have never seen a fishing lure ever before.

And there is one more thing. Even those we didn’t had luck the last two years for the really big ones. They are there. And when I mean big ones, I really mean the big ones. During our stay a friendly fly fishing guide, we were already fishing with, caught two fish over a meter, 48 inch and 43, and recently I heard about a pike caught by him that measured incredible 49 inch. Of course for catching this monsters you need a bit more than luck but Its all time possible to hook them.

That is is located in Europe and accessible by car is for me an advantage but the biggest of all is that spot exploring is so easy just with your computer at home.

And that’s why we come year after year. So also this story will be continued next year.
