Dry or Die?

The days are getting shorter and the season change is approaching. The pike fishing is around the corner but first I decided to stick to the salmonids. Now in the fall it’s particularly nice when the trees change color and colorful leaves swim downstream. Right now the time has come to fish on beautiful graylings.

Small flies are often the key to success in autumn. But often it is different than you think. Throughout the day I have more or less caught with dry flies. I’m a big fan of the dry fly. Actually, I never fish something else for any kind of salmonids but towards the end of the day I wanted to try something entirely different and I followed up on a small gray nymph and believe it or not. It was a massacre. Within a short time I was able to catch more fish than I did catch on the dry fly the whole day. I caught many graylings and also trouts like I haven’t caught before. The result was very scary to me since I thought I did everything best already. Man, I was wrong. But with all success on the nymph I’m still undecided whether this was the right way to fish.

There is nothing better than when a nice grayling is sipping a dry fly from the surface And this is exactly what makes this season so sexy. The mood on the waterfront is now a very special. For me, autumn is the most beautiful season of the year. The pike fishing must start like a rocket, calling it to be a serious competition. The next weeks will show it it will compete.

Summary of the day: Try different from time to time try to widen the horizon of fly fishing.

    • Hi Alf

Thanks for the compliment! Your magazine is also a class of its own! Congrats. Wish I could travel more around. Its always best so see something in real rather than watching it on TV.

  1. Greet Pics!

Did you fish the hole Tormäuer?
What do you think is the better fishing spot?

The Hintere or the Vordere Tormäuer?
    Cheers

    • Hello Julian

I would call the Tormäuer II (Vordere Tormäuer) as the better fishing spot. But it also has a major drawback. There are a lot of other fisherman and hikers so you are never alone there. In this respect I would rate the Tormäuer I as a more stable fishing spot. Both sections have advantages and disadvantages. Take the package and fish both!
